How the future tense is built

English future adds one helper word for everyone: I will walk, she will walk. Hebrew future puts the person on the verb itself, mostly at the front: a one-letter prefix (א, ת, י, נ), plus an ending (‑י or ‑ו) for some persons.

Shortcut: start from the infinitive, drop ל (or לה) and put the prefix in its place.

לְדַבֵּר−ל+אֲ=אֲדַבֵּר"I will speak"
לְהַזְמִין−לה+תַּ+ִי=תַּזְמִינִי"you (f.) will invite"

Three pairs are the very same word, even with niqqud: תִּכְתּוֹב = אַתָּה or הִיא; תִּכְתְּבוּ = אַתֶּם or אַתֶּן; יִכְתְּבוּ = הֵם or הֵן. Every matching pronoun counts. (Formal and biblical Hebrew has a separate form for אַתֶּן/הֵן, תִּכְתֹּבְנָה; everyday Hebrew doesn't use it.)

The shortcut works best for pi'el, hif'il, hitpa'el and nif'al. Pa'al has the most surprises. Tap a row for the clue and the trap.
